Menu Monday and Weekend Scenes

What a weekend!  While we were very fortunate to have beautiful weather here, we were glued to the television watching Irma hit Florida.  Fortunately it appears as though it wasn't as catastrophic as originally expected and it looks as though Jose may fizzle out!

With that said, on with our weekend...Saturday morning we headed to Dover Days for the Dover Dash which included a kids' race and a 5K.  Rowan ran her first road race...
It was off to a good start...
I trailed behind...
About half way through there were tears, but she made it to the finish!
The 5K went off shortly after and I received my first "handcrafted" medal for 2nd place in my age division...
After lunch we hit Oktoberfest at our local German American Club, it's a two day affair and is always a good time!
We took the kids out to a local restaurant for dinner and called it a day!  Sunday morning I hit SoulCycle and prepped for our Cousins Back-to-School Pizza Party that afternoon.  I found these apple cupcakes on Pinterest and thought they turned out cute!
We have a busy week ahead with a birthday in the house on Friday and we're also prepping for our Spanish exchange student to arrive next week, she'll be with us for ten days.  Here's what we have cooking...

Monday- Leftover Pizza & Salad
Tuesday- One Pan Greek Chicken
Wednesday- Heart Healthy Turkey Chili
Thursday- Spanakopita & Salad
Friday- Spaghetti & Meatballs
Saturday- family birthday dinner out
Sunday- TBD

How was your weekend?  Did you experience Irma?

Prayers for Florida

I called the Sunshine State home from 1981-1989 and we were fortunate to never experience a full blown hurricane during that time period.  I'm praying for the safety of everyone there as Irma approaches this weekend.

How do you like them apples?

I'm not sure about you, but come Labor Day I'm not quite ready for fall.  Technically we still have a couple of weeks of summer left and I'm all about celebrating the end of summer, back-to-school and apple season here in New England!  So apples take center stage in our home for the month of September...
I'm looking forward to apple picking soon, I love to eat them and bake with them!

Do you celebrate apple season?

Weekend Scenes

Our Labor Day Weekend can be summed up in one word...golf!  We spent the better part of the weekend at the TPC Boston enjoying the Dell Technologies Championship, a playoff tournament for the FedExCup.
Riley and I snuck in a couple of hours on Friday after he finished up a week long driver's education program. It was a gorgeous day!
After Saturday morning spin class, the whole family was up and out before lunch.  Somehow we kept Rowan entertained for 7 hours there!

 Phil...
Rory...
We took a break Sunday to attend a family barbecue, it was cool and rainy so we were happy to take a break!  Monday morning I was off to a local road race...
There was a 5K option...
and a 10K for the same price so I figured that I should get my money's worth!
After a quick shower, it was back to golf!  The beautiful weather returned for the last day of the tournament thankfully!
While the big kids enjoyed spending time with friends, Mr. PS, Rowan and I staked out a spot in the kid's zone on the 18th hole and watched several players come through.  Always fun to see crowd favorites Rickie and Phil!
We scooted out before the end so we could make it home for dinner!
How did you celebrate Labor Day Weekend?

What's The Scoop Wednesday

Island Kitchen Ice Cream

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Island Kitchen has become a well known mid-island breakfast, lunch and dinner spot over the past few years.  This year they expanded next-door into the space formerly occupied by the Grey Lady restaurant.  Their new space houses an ice cream and donut shop, a patio bar (left from the Grey Lady), a retail space and their catering business called Tillbury + Skiff.  Needless to say, there's a lot going on here and they're still working out the kinks.

We decided to try the ice cream just before we came home.  While there are several options on the flavor board, not all are visible in their ice cream case which made it difficult to decide.
Rowan tried one scoop of Milk Chocolate which was incredibly chocolatey!
Reagan had one scoop of their Charcoal Chip.  After some research I found out that charcoal ice cream is a thing...who new?  The flavor comes from almond charcoal and uses "activated charcoal".  It wasn't bad, it tasted like chocolate chip ice cream to me.
Mr. PS had three scoops of Chocolate Chunk & Reese's which he felt lacked chunks and Reese's.
Sadly there are no frozen yogurt options so I "forced myself "to try the Mint Chocolate Chunk.  It was creamy and delicious, I just wish I had ordered two scoops!
I would definitely return, especially since it's located mid-island with parking!  I sincerely hope they are successful with their expansion.  If you're ever on island, give it a try!

Pure Barre, Soul Cycle and Orangetheory...Oh My!

As you may know I'm a fairly loyal YMCA member.  Our membership has worked well for our family over the past several years allowing us to take swim lessons, participate in classes and use the fitness center.  We're fortunate to have a beautiful facility too!  The YMCA also allows me to place our membership on hold for the months of July and August while on Nantucket.

Our membership will reactivate this Friday on September 1st.  When we arrived home last Monday, I knew that I had two weeks to fill without my usual go to facility so I decided to take advantage and try some popular national fitness outlets!

I won a Pure Barre 10 class pack at Rowan's school auction last spring and I knew this would be the perfect time to put it to use!  I took my third class this morning and while I'm no stranger to barre, this class has proved to be more intense than the ones I have taken at the YMCA.  I admit I'm more of a cardio girl (I need to break a sweat) so I'm excited to try their new Pure Empower class that they're rolling out in September!

Pure Barre is no bargain, but you can take advantage and try it for a week for free!  From there class packs and membership options vary by location.
A new SoulCycle studio opened near us in May and again I decided that this was the perfect time to give it a try.  They offer a first time rider class for $20 so I went on Sunday for my first "SoulCycle"!  SoulCycle offer shoes for free for your first ride and then you can rent for $5 per ride after that.

The lobby and locker room area was bright and full of young energetic (mostly) women.  Once the studio door opened I found my bike that I had reserved online ahead of time.  The studio is dark and the bikes are PACKED in!  I chose a bike in the front row off to the side.  I adjusted my bike, clipped in and started warming up.  Our instructor was a bubbly young man who introduced himself and welcomed the group.  I knew this would be similar to my experience at Revolution in Charleston so I wasn't surprised when our ride included a lot of crunches, weights and dance moves!

SoulCycle is clearly aimed at the hipsters, not necessarily the 45 year old mother of three...with that said after your first ride, you can purchase a three pack of classes for $60 so I may give it another try!  From there the cost sky rockets in my opinion so I'm not sure how the young folks afford it!
I also decided to try Orangetheory Fitness since they offer a free class!  Orangetheory is high-intensity interval training using treadmills, rowers and a weight area.  Classes are usually one hour, but they offer a few 45 minute classes too. While it's not required, Orangetheory encourages wearing a heart rate monitor to track your workout.  Every class and workout is different, the coach advises you of the plan when you arrive.  I would liken this to a high energy group personal training experience.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed my Orangetheory class!  I'm not a treadmill runner, but in the group setting with coaching it wasn't bad at all!  In fact I realized that the treadmill work could really help me increase my speed as a runner.
I liked my experience so much that I signed up for their Orange Elite membership and have been two more times already! They offer a variety of options included class packs that can be used at any of their studios.
It's been a lot of fun to mix up my fitness routine over the past week!  It really renews your energy and gives your body a good jump start.  I would highly recommend taking advantage of any of these first-timer deals!

Have you tried Pure Barre, SoulCycle or Orangetheory Fitness?
